Dentistry For Autism Related Disorders

Autism is related to brain development that impacts how one perceives, understands and socializes with others.

To cope with the dental treatment becomes limiting as comprehension is slow. In borderline cases, and minimal dental treatment needs, slow approach with reassurance or laughing gas can be a treatment option if child is able to comprehend and cope with instructions. In case treatment needs are extensive and child is not able to cope, general anesthesia needs to be considered.

Since, there are limiting situations such as inability to brush well, chronic food pouching, maybe some underlying medications, incidence of cavities can go higher in Autistic children.

Regular biannual or four monthy check ups, Oral prophylaxis and Flouride application, functional updated dental information can prove to be helpful as proactive preventive step.
