NLP in Pediatric Dentistry

,

Neurolinguistic programming , NLP is a science that helps us understand the difference that makes a difference. This science comprises of variety of skills that range from manual for the mind to a tool box of techniques.

In very simple words, NLP helps us open up our frames to understand people and situations better, to be able to use the language in a way people actually understand.

When we deal with young kids or any adult for that matter, it is absolutely a must to know that they are behaving the way they are because in their logical, rational brain it is the right thing to do.

Since it feels right in their head, all I need is more understanding and compassion.

When NLP opens our understanding and frames about people, in the process it actually teaches us “Reframing”.

“Reframing” is one of the vital NLP tools that help us to overcome any situation with a feedback and a lesson rather than going deep into the situation and feeling like a failure. As per NLP language and philosophy, there are no hurts, failures but only feedback and lessons. Once the lesson is truly understood. the situation passes away. As they say, the master appears when we need the lesson and we are ready to learn it as well.

When we apply NLP to Pediatric Dentistry, we take the component that helps us understand the thoughts behind the behaviors of young children. When we understand, we see, hear and feel better. Many years into the profession, I have come to realize that understanding the very first whine of the child and stopping there to help immediately can definitely prevent a traumatic experience. We as dentists strive to provide positive dental attitudes that last a lifetime. All the assurance, and behavior management stands on the platform of open frames of understanding, reframing any negatives, taking feedback from each visit, modeling, meditation and imagination.

Subtle tools of NLP are of great assistance even when putting child under conscious sedation.

Hence knowledge and extent of NLP complements pediatric practice in terms of better understanding of children’s behavior, and thus modifying it in the way that allows the little ones to be able to cope better.
