Behavior Modifications

Mental health is a vital concern in current times. According to the science of child development
psychology, about 97% of human brain development is complete by the age of 5 to 7 year. Hence
each experience up until this age is significant in creating healthy foundation of developing
brain, dental experience much included.

The timely and wise application of behavior management techniques in pediatric dentistry plays
a critical role in enhancing the overall dental experience for children. Children often experience
anxiety and fear before and during dental visits, which can make necessary treatments more
challenging. By utilizing behavior management strategies, pediatric dentists can address these
emotional concerns and ensure a more positive experience.

The conventional methods of behavior modification such as Positive Reinforcement, Modelling,
Distraction techniques, Parental Involvement, Tell Show Do encourage desired behaviors by
making children feel more confident and secure.

The positive reinforcement creates a sense of accomplishment and helps build trust with the
dentist. Modeling achieved by sharing videos, images, or social media references of the
procedure in concern can help children observe and understand what to expect, reducing feelings
of uncertainty and fear.

The tell-show-do technique is another highly effective method demonstrating the steps in
simplified, comprehensible language helps children mentally prepare and reduce anxiety by
making the experience feel more predictable and manageable.

Distraction techniques such as music, videos, or games keep the child’s focus away from the
dental procedure and can significantly reduce stress and discomfort. In some cases, parental
involvement can also be an essential tool for calming the child, as having a trusted caregiver
present provides reassurance and comfort.

Apart from all the above age-old, tried tested and well documented techniques, the Innovative
concept bring forth diverse permutation and combination of fields such as NLP, ( Neuro
Linguistic Programming) EFT ( Emotional Freedom Technique), Buteyko Breathing, Child
Development Psychology, Theta Healing, Psyche K, Hypnotherapy and EYFS (Early Years
Foundation Stage).

NLP allows dentist and child to be on the same page by using specific words and language that
creates space of broader understanding, hence allowing appropriate following of instructions.
With the routine use of NLP words, it does become the language of communication within the
office. When used in combination of conscious sedation and NLP metaphors it creates a
transcending state where children feel safe, calm and composed.

Emotional freedom technique involves tapping at certain specific points to alleviate pain or any
sensitive moment of the appointment, for instance delivering anesthesia. Buteyko breathing is the formatted breathing pattern from the nose that allows comfortable lying down position in the chair, proper oxygenation hence composed demeanor.

There are great deal of concepts that arise from the extensive knowledge of child development
psychology, theta meditation techniques, EYFS, Psyche K and Hypnotherapy which when
inculcated together can actually create deeper understandings, and safe environment where child
feels the sense of belonging.

By applying these behavior management techniques, pediatric dentists foster a sense of safety
and control, which is essential for a child’s mental health. Reducing dental anxiety not only
creates a more pleasant experience but also encourages better cooperation, making it easier for
the dentist to perform necessary treatments. Over time, this leads to the development of positive
dental habits and a healthier relationship with dental care, promoting overall well-being.
